Beaches Museum hosting exhibit opening

The Beaches Museum, 381 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, will open the exhibit "American Dream: Steps Toward Abstraction" by Caitlin Flynn Friday, Aug. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. Artwork will be available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the museum.

Guided hike set for Saturday at reserve

A guided exploration hike will be held Saturday, Aug. 5, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve. The hike will cover the Guana peninsula's natural biodiversity, cultural history and estuarine resources, and efforts to protect those resources.

NFL Alumni offering football cheer clinic

The NFL Alumni Jax Chapter will offer a football cheer clinic Saturday, Aug. 5, from 8 a.m. to noon at PVPV-Rawlings Elementary School, 610 S.R. A1A N., Ponte Vedra Beach. Former players and cheerleaders will lead girls and boys through football and cheerleading drills.

FWC seeks public input on snook regional management

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is proposing new management regions for snook along with regional regulations based on the fishery status in each region.

Record-setting catch made during tournament

Capt. Dan Crowley of Ponte Vedra and his crew boated this 57.75-pound kingfish. Their impressive catch ended up setting a new record in the 43rd Annual Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament, which ended July 21.

Libraries holding end-of-summer parties

Kids and teens can celebrate the end of the Jacksonville Public Library's summer reading with a "Drop-In Summer Closing Party." Parties will be held Monday, July 31, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Beaches Branch Library, 600 Third St., Neptune Beach, and Thursday, Aug. 3, from 3 to 4 p.m.

Kingfish tournament is off and running

The heat of summer has settled in, and we’re right in the middle of peak fishing season on the First Coast. Kingfish are everywhere nearshore, bottom fishing is hot offshore, tarpons are all along the beach and lots of redfish action in the creeks.
