Deck The Chairs will mark 10th anniversary with Nov. 23 opening

The world’s only holiday light display featuring decorated lifeguard chairs is set to open its 10th season on Nov. 23. Organizers of Jacksonville Beach Deck The Chairs Deckin’ Decade are planning more chairs and more shows.

Fishing is heating up

As August marches toward September, the weather is slowly cooling off while the fishing is quickly heating up. Off shore is wide open; nearshore has been incredible; inshore the mullet run and change in seasons has everything feeding with the transition to fall fishing patterns beginning.

Senators return to the field

On Aug. 19, Fletcher High School hosted Creekside High in the Kickoff Classic. In spite of the rain, fans filled the stadium to support their home teams. Jacksonville Beach Firefighters also came by to show their support for Fletcher.

Recreational harvest of red grouper in Gulf state waters to close on Aug. 30

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is closing the recreational harvest of red grouper in state waters of the Gulf of Mexico, excluding waters of Monroe County, on Aug. 30 for the remainder of the 2022 fishing season. Harvest will reopen on Jan. 1, 2023.

Keep an eye on the weather this time of year

The mullet are moving on the beach and in the inlets this week. Sharks, jacks, tarpon, trout, everything eats mullet, and the dinner bell has been ringing this week. This is the time to sneak out after the storms or early in the morning to catch some of the action.

August blue crab trap closures for Florida’s northeast coast waived

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has waived the blue crab trap closure previously scheduled for Aug. 20 through 29, for all waters from Nassau through Volusia counties. Recreational and commercial blue crab traps may remain in the water during this period.

Inaugural 'Pickleball 101' event held in Jacksonville Beach

In advance of its launch on National Pickleball Day, First Dink hosted its inaugural event, “Pickleball 101,” a youth clinic, Aug. 6 at South Beach Park in Jacksonville Beach. More than 50 kids from ages 4-1/2 to 16 turned out.

FHS memorial ball wall gets new look

Friends and teammates of former Fletcher High School lacrosse player Maggie Paxton have a new wall to honor her legacy. Muralist Kyle Montiero recently transformed the ball wall on the team’s practice field, which was originally dedicated to Paxton last June.
