Corps awards contract for Big Fishweir aquatic environment restoration project

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, awarded a contract Aug. 26, 2022, to execute an aquatic ecosystem restoration project at Big Fishweir Creek. Big Fishweir Creek is an urban tributary of the St. Johns River, running approximately four miles south of Downtown Jacksonville.

Netflix production to cause temporary road closures in Vilano Beach

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 30 and 31, a Netflix production crew will film at the Magic Beach Motel for a new series. Residents and visitors can expect activity beginning Monday, Aug. 29, through Thursday, Sept. 1. The filming will occur during the evening and overnight hours.

An upscale commercial development that will reconfigure approximately 1.5 acres in downtown Jacksonville Beach received preliminary approval Aug. 15 by the City Council. Officials voted unanimously in support of a rezoning application for “The Gallery at Jacksonville Beach.

Investigators are seeking information in the shooting of an 18-year-old man killed early Aug. 14 in Atlantic Beach. Police responded to reports of gunfire at the Orchid Trace Apartments shortly after 4 a.m. The victim was identified as Trevaj Cheek.
