Chieftains bring tour finale to St. Augustine

Irish performers The Chieftans will play at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre with a special appearance by the Jacksonville Symphony on Sunday, March 19, beginning at 6 p.m. The Chieftans have been playing together for more than 55 years.

The Annual Guide to Beach Life is featured in the March 16 issues of The Beaches Leader and Ponte Vedra Leader. Beach Life features information on local festivals, sports, schools, parks, medical facilities, attractions and more.

Skatepark opener set

The city of Jacksonville Beach will mark the grand opening of the Jax Beach Skatepark on Thursday, March 16, at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which will include a skating demonstration by local 12-year-old skater Tyler Kirshenbaum.

Senators get huge softball win over Atlantic Coast

Fletcher picked up a huge win last week, taking down one of the area’s top softball teams in Atlantic Coast. The Senators (2-5) won the game 9-3 behind the hitting of Bailey Cooley and Sani Farris, who both went 3-for-4 on the day and driving in three runs each. Cooley added a double in the win.

Black drum biting in Mayport Inlet

The inshore black drum bite is excellent! Anglers are catching big drum in the 20- to 50-pound range in the Mayport Inlet and as far down the river as the Dames Point bridge. Local fisherman Robert Strickland headed out drum fishing and landed four big uglies, the largest being around 45 pounds.

Sharks defeat Creekside, Fletcher remains winless in softball

Ponte Vedra won its game last week against Creekside 3-1, improving pitcher Michelle Holder to 2-1 this season. Catcher Taylor Bradshaw led the Sharks at the plate, connecting three times in four at-bats and driving in a run.

Guana Lake producing large trout

The recent hot bite was in the Guana Lake. The northern half of the lake reopened after the duck hunting season, and local anglers hit it pretty hard. Tim Stouder, of Ponte Vedra, along with a crew of kayakers, fished the lake opening week and really cleaned up.

Jacksonville Beach has new pickleball organization

Jax Beach Pickleball, a new organization dedicated to growing the game of pickleball in Jacksonville Beach, held its first free clinic Jan. 28 at South Beach Park. Fourteen enthusiastic people showed up to learn about America's fastest growing sport.

Snook reopens in Atlantic state waters

The recreational harvest season for snook reopens on Feb. 1 in Florida’s Atlantic coastal and inland waters (from the Miami-Dade/Monroe county line north), including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River. The season will remain open through May 31.

Ocean Yoga Ocean Yoga, 51 Pine St., Atlantic Beach, offers beginner's yoga classes Monday at 11 a.m. and Wednesday at 5 p.m. New mixed level yoga classes are offered weekdays at 7, 8 and 9:15 a.m., and 5, 6 and 6:30 p.m. Saturday classes are offered at 8:30 and 10 a.m.
