Weather forecast calls for high heat, good fishing

It has been quite a week on the First Coast for fishermen – the last taste of spring before the summer heat settles in over the weekend. Fishing has been fantastic the last couple of weeks, with bait around Mayport being the only complaint.

Fletcher v. Sandalwood rivalry returns

The spring football game between Fletcher and Sandalwood has rekindled one of the best rivalries in North Florida. On May 16, the two programs resumed play in a college-style controlled scrimmage which saw both teams accumulate 30 plays on offense and defense.

Winners of JAGA Family Championship announced

The JAGA Family Championship was held May 11 at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club. A total of 72 golfers, some as young as 9 years old, competed in the two-person scramble event.

Seabreeze celebrates Morning Mile Club

Seabreeze Elementary celebrates its Morning Mile Club with a breakfast for students who ran 100 miles this year. Out of the 200 students who participated in the program, 31 kindergarteners through fifth graders reached the 100-mile goal.

Fletcher Middle swim and dive teams win championships

Fletcher Middle School Boys Swim and Dive team won the DCPS City Championships for the second year in a row May 11 at Cecil Aquatics Center. Under the direction of Coaches Mary Phillips and Lynn McCarthy, Fletcher beat 12 other middle school teams to win the title.

Stone crab season closes May 16

The commercial and recreational harvest of stone crab claws in Florida closes on May 16, with the last day of harvest on May 15. Stone crab season will reopen on Oct. 15. This five-month closure occurs each year during the peak spawning season to help conserve Florida’s valuable stone crab resource.

Warm weather brings out variety of fish

Summertime is in the air, and summer fishing is here! This last week has seen a huge change in the local fishing as the water temperature skyrocketed from 71 up to 77 along the beach. The waves of pelagic predators that follow the bait migration are here for the summer.
