Fletcher baseball closes season

The Fletcher High School baseball team played a double header against Paxon Nov. 21 to end the fall season, winning both games. The two games were pitched by Brenden McKinney, Ryen Deangelis, Walker Rabren and closer Davis Manabat. Garrett Burton hit three home runs on the day.

Night Riders surfing competition held

Local surfer Cody Thompson nabbed his third win in the Red Bull Night Riders competition held Nov. 20 at the Mayport Poles. The event was not publicized to limit the crowds. Last year, the nighttime surf competition drew hundreds of spectators to the Jacksonville Beach fishing pier.

Jacksonville Golf and Country Club wins championship

On Nov. 23, the team representing host Jacksonville Golf and Country Club posted a 14-under-par score of 130 to outlast 21 other area teams and win the 23rd Club Team Championship, conducted by the Jacksonville Area Golf Association and the Northern Chapter of the North Florida PGA.

FHS twins receive scholarships

Twin sisters Juliana and Sophia Hilliard, daughters of Jill and Eddie Hilliard and sisters of Faith Hilliard of Atlantic Beach, have signed full athletic and academic scholarships with Women’s Soccer Coach Brian Fallon of Webber International University in Florida.

Snook seasonal closure in Gulf starts Dec. 1

The recreational harvest season for snook closes Dec. 1 in Gulf state and federal waters, including Monroe County and Everglades National Park, and will remain closed through Feb. 28, 2021, reopening to harvest March 1, 2021. Anglers may continue to catch and release snook during the closed season.

Focus on inshore fishing

Judging by the sold out bait shops, Memorial Day number of boats at the ramp, and gunwale-to-gunwale action along the jetties, it sure felt everyone got out and enjoyed the fishing weather last weekend.

2020 Lionfish Challenge winners announced

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) recently announced the fifth annual Lionfish Challenge winners. The FWC will honor the first place winners in each category at their hometown dive shops via Facebook Live events on Facebook.com/FWCReefRangers.

Lot of variables in weekend forecast

Despite it being the middle of November the tropics are still very much alive this year, and with that activity comes a high degree of variability in the weekend forecast. As of the time of this writing, we are in the middle of the projected cone for the remnants of Eta.

Inshore fishing only option given weekend forecast

It’s looking like another weekend of windy conditions and occasional rain on the First Coast. The last few months have been hard on weekend anglers with the good weather windows seemingly always falling mid week.

Final consideration for draft proposal for flounder slated for December

At its October Commission meeting, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved draft changes to the management of Florida’s flounder fishery, including several updates that were made since the first draft rule proposal presented in July.
