Jacksonville Beach looks to make municipal golf course pay for itself

The Jacksonville Beach municipal golf course is not paying its own way and the city is looking at redeveloping the greens and revising course fees. During a budget workshop Tuesday to discuss the Parks and Recreation Department, plans to improve the golf course were detailed.

GTM Research Reserve offers free lecture

The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTM Research Reserve) invites the public to attend a free lecture, "Afternoon Insight: Studying Juvenile Sea Turtles," on Wednesday, Aug. 17, from 3 to 4 p.m., at the Environmental Education Center in Ponte Vedra Beach.

Jacksonville native and Fleet Landing resident Eugene Alvarez, Ph.D., has just published his most recent book, "Parris Island 'The Cradle of the Corps' A History of the United States Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, 1562-2015.

Beach renourishment gear to arrive

Duval County beach renourishment is expected to begin in early September, with equipment staging to begin Aug. 15. Neptune Beach City Manager Andy Hyatt told the city council that the approximately $13 million project will begin south of the Jacksonville Beach Pier, working its way north.

Top Atlantic Beach lifeguards honored

Atlantic Beach Ocean Rescue hosted its annual lifeguard banquet recently, where the two most prestigious honors were awarded to Hannah Phillips for Guard of the Year and Kaley Delay for Rookie of the Year. Phillips is a third-year guard who joined the patrol her senior year of high school.

Legacy continues for Ponte Vedra family dentistry practice

Kane Sears graduated from the University of Florida College of Dentistry in May, with plans to join his family’s Ponte Vedra dentistry practice – a legacy of 97 years and counting. The Sears dental legacy began with Kane’s grandfather, Dr.

Stage reading at ABET will feature co-founder

Atlantic Beach Experimental Theatre (ABET) will present a staged reading of "The Waverly Gallery" beginning on Friday, Aug. 12, as part of ABET Summer Specials. The play was written by Kenneth Lonergan and is directed by Jack Barnard, with stage management by Debra Harvey.

PV United Methodist Church hosting the homeless

Ponte Vedra United Methodist Church is gearing up for company at the end of August when two or three homeless families will move into the church as part of a nonprofit program called Family Promise of Jacksonville.
