Great time of year for trout, pompano and more

April is here and a great month for fishing on the First Coast. This time of year is great for targeting big trout, crawling redfish, pompano, mahi, cobia, blackfin – spring fishing at its finest. The pandemic we are all facing has closed almost everything, but, for now, the boat ramps remain open.

Fletcher JV baseball players shop for elderly

With baseball on hold, a few members of the Fletcher junior varsity boys baseball team took to Walmart to shop and create bags of necessities for the elderly patients at Heartland.

Willing to bet ramps will close next

Well, I’m not sure what to report. The wahoo bite is great, the cobia are coming, the sheepshead have been spawning, but COVID is here and almost everybody with a boat seems to have decided to party on the sandbars since the beaches are closed.

Ponte Vedra girls lacrosse secures win

In what may be the final game of their season, the Ponte Vedra Lady Sharks Lacrosse Team (10-1) traveled to Orlando to take on the powerhouse Hornets of Bishop Moore High School (6-4). The game featured two of the strongest girls lacrosse programs in North Florida.

World Golf Hall of Fame to induct Tiger Woods

The World Golf Hall of Fame will enshrine 82-time PGA TOUR winner Tiger Woods as part of its Class of 2021. Woods received the news of his impending Induction in the Male Competitor category via phone from PGA TOUR Commissioner and World Golf Foundation Board Chairman Jay Monahan.

Landrum girls win St. Johns championship

The Landrum girls basketball team won the St. John’s County Basketball Championship March 11 with a win over Murray Middle School by the score of 40-34 to finish the season undefeated. Taylor Perce led the team with 13 points, while Regan Chappell scored 10 points.

Fletcher JV baseball earns win at Fernandina Beach

Fletcher's junior varsity baseball team played March 10 at Fernandina Beach, winning with a score of 10-7. The game was pitched by a combo of three pitchers, Veniard (#18), Burton (#24) and Reed (#12).

Bait shops are still open and people have time off

The fish have not yet decided to quarantine and are still biting as well as they were before the world shut down. As of now, bait shops are still open, gas is cheap and people have time off.

Fletcher softball receives grant

Fletcher Softball was recently presented a $2,000 grant by Dick's Sporting Goods. Shown are Assistant Coach Gordie with representatives from Dicks, and the five Fletcher seniors, Makalla Maness, Sierra Lake, Maddie Powell, Dallas Watterson and Maya Harris.
