Inshore fishing is steady

Wow, what a weekend we had last week. The Old School Kingfish shootout had an amazing turnout with over 600 boats. Huge congratulations to the Riley family for taking first place on the “The Polar Beer” with a 43-pound kingfish.

Solomon Calhoun Pool open for family, lap swimming

The Solomon Calhoun Pool, 1300 Duval St., St. Augustine, has expanded services and swim times. The pool is available for lap swim from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and family swim from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

Gag grouper season is open for recreational harvest in most state Gulf of Mexico waters and all federal Gulf waters (season opening does not include Franklin, Wakulla, Taylor and Jefferson counties, which opened April 1, nor Monroe County, which follows the Atlantic state season and opened May 1).

The 2020 recreational bay scallop season for Dixie County and a portion of Taylor County opens June 15 and will remain open through Labor Day (Sept. 7). This includes all state waters from the Suwannee River to the Fenholloway River, and includes the towns of Keaton Beach and Steinhatchee.

Now is the time to register for the 2020 Lionfish Challenge. The Lionfish Challenge is an incentive program that rewards harvesters for their lionfish removals. With a tiered system, everybody can be a winner. The participant who harvests the most lionfish will be crowned the Lionfish King/Queen.

USA Cycling Road Amateur Nationals set for September

The future of USA Cycling is still coming to Clay County in 2020. After postponing the event at the start of the pandemic, USA Cycling has rescheduled its Road Amateur National Championships to Sept. 10 through 13 in Clay County – the first of a two-year agreement to host the event.
