Local student wins DAR award

Beaches Chapel fifth-grader Holtsman Andreu was awarded the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) award. The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.

BEAM scheduled to reopen for in-person services June 1

As of June 1, clients of the food pantries of Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry (BEAM) will be able to go inside and do their own shopping. There are two  store-like facilities operated by BEAM where clients get food: 850 6th Ave. S. in Jacksonville Beach and 1447 Mayport Road in Atlantic Beach.

Community comes together to donate surfboards and musical instruments

What started with a single surfboard is sending a wave of kindness throughout the community. Larry Ward of Atlantic Beach was overwhelmed by the ripple effect he has experienced since he shared a social media post seeking to gift a free surfboard to a deserving family.

Regal Theater closed permanently

The screens have gone dark for good at the Regal Theater. Last month, the Jacksonville City Council unanimously approved a measure to rezone the property to allow a multi-family development at 14501 Beach Blvd.

Atlantic Beach student wins statewide essay contest

An Atlantic Beach middle school student received top honors in the Florida League of Cities essay content. Layla McLaren, an eighth-grade student at Seaside Community Charter School, composed the winning essay in the statewide “If I Were Elected Mayor” competition.

Commission approves plan for capital improvements in Atlantic Beach

A plan designed to guide future capital improvement projects was approved May 10 in Atlantic Beach. The City Commission unanimously adopted a connectivity plan to help identify missing connections to parks, neighborhoods, schools, commercial corridors and other areas.
