Hoop dreams end with OT loss

A step away from its first-ever final four appearance, the Ponte Vedra High boys basketball team nearly upended highly-favored Zephyrhills in Feb. 19’s Region 2-5A final, but the host Bulldogs prevailed 76-68 in overtime.

Solomon named youth bowling coach of the year

Allen Solomon of Jacksonville Beach, who has been the youth director at Beach Bowl for 27 years, has been selected to receive the 2016 David Dahms Coach of the Year Award.

Archery tournament is Saturday

The 2016 National Archery in the Schools Program Florida State Tournament, under the direction of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), will be held in Bartow on Feb. 27. Admission is free.

Senators fall to Stingrays in softball

Fletcher High was seeking to even its District 2-8A record entering last Friday night’s softball showdown against Atlantic Coast, but a four-run Stingrays rally in the fourth inning turned the tide in the visitors’ favor.

SeaWalk music festival is this weekend

The Community First SeaWalk Music Festival will be held this weekend in Jacksonville Beach. Hours are noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The third annual festival features local artists, food vendors and more.

'Natural Currents' opens Feb. 26 at CCPVB

The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach will unveil its next main gallery exhibit, “Natural Currents,” on Friday, Feb. 26. “Natural Currents” pairs two esteemed local artists, John Bunker and Brian Frus, for a unique exhibition of paintings and glass sculpture.

Training clinic for veterans

A free three-day youth umpire training clinic for military veterans, with new 501(c)(3) Officials Helping Warriors of War, will be held Monday, Feb. 29, through Wednesday, March 2, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. No experience is needed, equipment is provided and certifications to start are paid for.

Senators overcome Saints in softball

Despite falling behind by two runs in the top of the first inning Feb. 12, Fletcher High’s bats came alive to the tune of 15 hits en route to a 7-2 softball victory over Sandalwood.

Fletcher players named to All-Gateway soccer teams

A number of Fletcher High players were named to the All-Gateway conference boys and girls soccer teams. On the girls squad, goalkeper Taylor May, forward Morgan Patton and midfielders Mikaela McGee, Erika Middleton and Danielle Van Liere made first team.
