Atlantic Beach tightens up building limits

Despite strong criticism from several residents, Atlantic Beach Feb. 25 tightened up its limits on how much of a lot can be built on, maintaining tougher rules are needed to address stormwater problems citywide.

Man dies in house fire

Lack of a smoke detector led to the death of a 66-year-old man in a Jacksonville Beach home fire Feb. 2, just four months after city firefighters installed smoke alarms in the home. The man, who has not been identified yet by authorities, was home alone and asleep in a home at 716 11th St. N.

Lineup announced for Springing the Blues

The artist/musician lineup for the 2019 Springing the Blues Festival has been announced, with the annual event to be held April 5 through April 7 in Jacksonville Beach.

City approves ordinance to allow Bold Brands microbrewery

A coffeehouse, a magazine publisher and a microbrewery with a small tasting room will open at Shetter Avenue and 6th Street South. Bold Brands, which will publish a craft beer magazine, has proposed to open a coffeehouse and craft beer microbrewery with its publishing offices. The city council Feb.

Savings from JB fire merger with Jax still unclear 

It is unclear what savings Jacksonville Beach taxpayers might actually realize if the county takes over fire protection services for the Beach city, according to a preliminary draft. A proposed agreement between the city and county calls for Jacksonville Beach to pay the county $2.

Atlantic Beach nixes annexation

The city of Atlantic Beach will not move forward with a proposed annexation that would have increased the city's size by more than 600 acres.  The annexation of the Jacksonville-owned property located north of Dutton Island Road could have increased revenue in the city by nearly $300,000.

Meninak names 100th president

Atlantic Beach resident Kerry Varkonda was installed as the 100th president of the Meninak Club on Jan. 5 at the President’s Reception. The event honored outgoing President Bob Buehn, who thanked his board and committee chairs before passing the bell and gavel to Varkonda.
