A 12-year-old Atlantic Beach girl died Sept. 25 from COVID-19, making her the youngest person in Duval County to succumb to the virus. Elizabeth McNew, a virtual student at Mayport Coastal Sciences Middle School, died after battling the virus for 10 days, according to family members.

Following a small swearing in ceremony Sept. 23, Victor “Vic” Gualillo is officially the new chief of police in Atlantic Beach. Recently, city officials confirmed City Manager Shane Corbin’s recommendation to appoint Gualillo as chief, a position he’s served on three previous occasions.
