Local students head to Girls State

Qualified high school juniors selected to participate in the Girls State program left recently for their weeklong immersion into government. Activities included legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations and assemblies. Girls State began in 1937.

Cleanup held at Hanna Park

Beaches Go Green teamed up with local company ERC for a Hanna Park and trail Clean-up. They had 112 volunteers who contributed 234 hours to cleaning the city of Jacksonville park, located in Atlantic Beach. Volunteers collected 19 bags of litter total – eight were trash and 11 were recyclables.

FEMA approves funds to assist St. Johns County

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved funds to assist St. Johns County with partially restoring and rebuilding the sand dunes along portions of St Johns County’s coastline that were damaged by Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Irma.

Neptune Beach city manager to serve on Florida League of Cities policy committee

The Florida League of Cities, the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments, announced that Neptune Beach’s city manager, Stefen Wynn, was appointed to serve on the Florida League of Cities 2021-2022 Legislative Policy Committee, one of the league’s five Legislative Policy Committees.

Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed the “Florida Leads” fiscal year 2021-2022 state budget, which totaled $101.5 billion and includes $169 million in tax relief.

PVHS, Nease students clean Mickler Road

Student volunteers from Nease High School and Ponte Vedra High School Beaches Go Green High School Clubs adopted a one-mile stretch of Mickler Road and completed their first cleanup June 6. Thirty-five volunteers contributed 105 volunteer hours.

Statewide bike lane will run through the Beaches

Cyclists may soon have a dedicated travel lane from the Georgia border to Florida’s southernmost point. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation is seeking to establish bike routes in each state.

New members for Beaches Exchange Club

At its June 11 meeting, the Beaches Exchange Club inducted two new members and reinstated a returning former member. New members are Chad Yarkie and Mark Grubb, while Bob Hicks is the reinstated member.
