St. Johns River blue crab trap closure starts Jan. 16

Recreational and commercial blue crab traps in all waters of the St. Johns River system must be removed from the water before Jan. 16, the first day of a 10-day trap closure.

Rutgers to play in Gator Bowl

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are headed to Jacksonville. The Scarlet Knights have accepted an invitation from the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl Board of Trustees to play in the 77th TaxSlayer Gator Bowl as the replacement for Texas A&M.

Excellent weekend to get out on the water

Merry Fishmas ya filthy animals. With weather in the 70s and sunshine on the forecast, I hope Santa has a few boats and lot of fishing equipment headed for the First Coast this year. All in all, it looks like an excellent weekend to get out for some time on the water.

Spotted seatrout Central East Management Region season reopens Jan. 1

Spotted seatrout will reopen to recreational harvest Jan. 1 in the spotted seatrout Central East Management Region, which includes all state and federal waters from Palm Beach through Volusia counties (see map). Spotted seatrout are one of Florida’s most popular inshore fisheries.

9th Annual Clays for a Cause raises $225,000 for local nonprofits

The 9th Annual Clays for a Cause event, presented by St. Johns County homebuilder MasterCraft Builder Group, was held Dec. 9 at Saltwaters Shooting Club in St. Augustine.

DeLay takes 10th in Cross Country Championships

Kayley DeLay finished 10th in the Division 1 NCAA Cross Country Championships Nov. 20. Her time was 19:37 over the 6K course in Tallahassee. DeLay, a former Fletcher Senator harrier, is in her senior year at Yale University. By finishing 10th, DeLay earned All-American Honors.

Pop Warner cheer teams compete at nationals

Jacksonville Beach Pop Warner cheerleading sent three teams to the Pop Warner Nationals. Mitey Mite placed ninth out of 16, Junior Pee Wee placed third out of 11 and Junior Varsity placed second out of 11.

It has been a beautiful start to December with great fishing and good weather. The ocean on Sunday and Monday was as nice as possible, and the fishing last week was wide open off shore. Inshore, the bite has been steady.
