New events encouraging use of Latham Plaza

A new monthly event is drawing more people to Latham Plaza in Jacksonville Beach. The Seawalk Sessions are held the first Wednesday of every month and spotlight acoustic musicians on the plaza green. The free, family-friendly event also features a local food truck at 11 1st St. N.

FCMP starts 12th season at Beaches Museum

The Florida Chamber Music Project (FCMP) will open its 12th season Sept. 8 at the Beaches Museum Chapel at the Beaches Museum, 505 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach. “We are very excited about this ‘Music Among Friends’ season,” said Susan Pardue, artistic director. “We open with Haydn and Bartok.

Jax Beach Baseball Association wins state championship

Players from the Jacksonville Beach Baseball Association won the Cal Ripken 11U Florida State Championship. The team will move on to the Cal Ripken 11U World Series in Florence, Ala., Aug. 1. The series ends Aug. 11.

Back-to-School with BEAM set for Aug. 3

Beaches Emergency Assistance Ministry (BEAM) will host its annual Back-to-School event Saturday, Aug. 3, from 8 a.m. to noon at Beach Church, 325 7th Ave. N., Jacksonville Beach. This year, Sulzbacher Center will offer on-site school health exams in its Health Mobile during the event.

Observe nature through journaling at GTM Research Reserve

Nature journaling with instructor Elaine Bergstrom will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 1, at the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTMNERR). Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes; a hat, insect repellent, water and sunscreen are recommended.

Paddle tennis center planned for Jacksonville Beach

Paddle tennis is coming to Jacksonville Beach. The city's Board of Adjustment recently approved a variance request to allow for the development of an indoor paddle tennis center at 510 Shetter Ave. on the site of a former plant nursery.
