Starfish Strut contributes to 100 Mile Club

The 3rd annual Jacksonville Beach Elementary Starfish Strut 5K and 2.5K will be held Saturday, March 5, presented by The Brace Place Orthodontics. The Starfish Strut will be held on the beach, beginning at 9 a.m., at the Atlantic Beach Lifeguard Station at the foot of Ahern Street by One Ocean.

A bike that is more than a sport vehicle

Jim Simmons wants that bike that is in the back of your garage, unused and lonely. His vision, now a reality, is repairing that bike and getting it into the hands of someone at the Beach who needs transportation. He took his idea to his church outreach ministry and Life Cycles was born.

GTM Research Reserve hosts lecture on marine mammals

The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTM Research Reserve) invites the public to attend a free lecture titled, "Afternoon Insight ... Marine Mammals." The event will be held on Wednesday, Feb.17, 3-4 p.m.

Neptune Beach may permit chickens

A pilot program that would allow backyard hens in certain residential districts in Neptune Beach will be discussed during Tuesday's city council workshop. According to the proposed ordinance, backyards hens would be permitted in certain districts, subject to a one-time fee of $25.

Pike tapped to lead Neptune Beach police

Neptune Beach City Manager Andy Hyatt has selected Neptune Beach Sgt. Richard Pike to fill the police chief position, pending the approval of city council. The council vote to approve Pike for the position will take place Tuesday, Feb. 16, during a special meeting of the council.

State funding requested for improvements in Neptune Beach

Representatives from the city of Neptune Beach met with State Senator Audrey Gibson and other members of the Duval Delegation at the Capitol in Tallahassee to request state funding for water, wastewater and stormwater improvements in Neptune Beach. The city is seeking $1.

Ferry to resume running Feb. 18

The St. Johns River Ferry is anticipated to begin running normal daily service on Thursday, Feb. 18. The ferry has been out of service since Jan. 5 to allow for inspection and overhaul as periodically required by the United States Coast Guard. For updates, visit www.stjohnsriverferry.com.

American String Quartet performs Sunday
