Grafting plants at home easier than you think

Growing tomatoes, at least the varieties with the highest impact in flavor and production with which I was most familiar early in my life, has been more challenging for me since moving to our beach community. Some varieties are simply not well-suited for our soil and environmental conditions.

Blanton sisters exhibit at Adele Grage

Heather and Holly Blanton share the walls of the Adele Grange Cultural Center in Atlantic Beach this month.  A reception for the artists will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. March 17, during the North Beaches Artwalk.  The Jacksonville-born twins both share a passion for art.

Beaches Museum Chapel hosting concert

Col. Bruce Hampton will perform from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Beaches Museum Chapel. Food will be provided by MoJo’s Southern Soul BBQ Kitchen. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 day of show. Dinners will be $10. Food and drink start at 6 p.m. Call 241-5657 for information.

Baseball winning streak hits four games

After opening the season with five straight losses, the Fletcher High baseball team has righted its ship over the last two weeks and is currently in the midst of a four-game winning streak.

Celtic Music Festival returns to St. Augustine

The 6th Annual St. Augustine Celtic Music & Heritage Festival will be held March 11 through March 13 at Francis Field, 29 W. Castillo Dr. Bands scheduled to appear include Albannach, Dublin City Ramblers, Emish, Poor Angus, Rathkeltair, Scuttered the Bruce, Searson and Seven Nations.

It’s a beautiful day and the fishing is good. Suddenly, the line snags on something as the cast is made. A bird is hooked. Don’t panic. There’s a way to get that bird released.

Ponte Vedra defeats Miami Gulliver Prep 18-9 in boys lacrosse

The Sharks improved to 9-0 on the season with a lopsided win over the previously unbeaten Raiders March 4 at the Shark Tank. Andrew O’Dare led PV with five goals and an assist while Clay Welch and C.D. James each put in three goals and notched one assist apiece.

Emerging artist

Will Skinner, a sophomore at The Bolles School, is the first artist selected for the Beaches Town Center Agency's new Emerging Artist Series. His painting is being auctioned off on www.32auctions.com/emergingartist, until March 18 to benefit the BTCA.

Sawgrass Village redo nearing completion

Construction at Sawgrass Village is in its final stages and expected to wrap up in time for The Players in May. Phase two of the redevelopment began construction in early 2015 with the demolition of several office buildings and site work enhancements on Village Main Street.

Python challenge a success

With participants turning in 106 snakes, the 2016 Python Challenge is a success on many levels. The FWC announced the results and winners of the Python Removal Competition at the 2016 Python Challenge award ceremony in Davie.
