The Ponte Vedra Lady Sharks (12-13) basketball season ended in the District Finals Feb. 7 as they battled the Yellow Jackets of St. Augustine High School (18-5). The Lady Sharks started the game with strong defense and a conservative offense. The size of the Yellow Jackets didn’t affect the Lady Sharks, as they used their speed and discipline to go into halftime with a 23-20 lead.
Ponte Vedra kept the pressure on the Yellow Jackets in the third quarter and led by a point heading into the fourth quarter. St. Augustine scored two quick baskets in the fourth and then slowed the game down in a stall tactic which limited the Lady Sharks' possessions in the quarter. In the end, Ponte Vedra succumbed to St. Augustine 44-37.
Ponte Vedra’s freshman forward Tori Balser led all scorers with 19 points, and PV’s guards Sophia Fraga (6 points) and Trish Balser (5 points) kept the Lady Sharks in the game until late in the fourth quarter.
