The Lady Sharks (2-4) hosted Fleming Island High School (4-1) Dec. 6. The Fleming Island team won the contest 50 to 36.
The Ponte Vedra Lady Sharks basketball team (2-3) hosted the Mustangs of Mandarin High School (4-2) on Dec. 5. The Lady Sharks came out with a game plan of smothering defense and electric offensive movement. The size of the Mustangs didn’t affect the Lady Sharks as they used their speed and discipline to go into halftime with a 28 to 16 lead. Ponte Vedra kept the pressure on the Mustangs in the second half and finally pulled away in the fourth quarter, finishing with a 46 to 31 win.
Ponte Vedra’s freshman forward Tori Balser led all scorers with 16 points (6 rebounds and a block). PV’s guards Trish Balser (3 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals), Reeghan Mayer (10 points, 4 rebounds and a steal) and Sophia Fraga (4 points, 3 steals, 4 rebounds and an assist) pushed the tempo of the game with rebounds and quick outlet passes for easy baskets.
The Lady Sharks (2-5) traveled to Oakleaf High School (7-2) Dec. 10.
Ponte Vedra’s forward Tori Balser (14 points) and guard Paige Hulihan (7 points), led the Sharks in a battle of wills. In the end, Turner’s 19 points were too much for PV and they succumbed to the Knights with a final score of 40 to 32.
