On April 17th, Robert “Bob” George Totter passed away peacefully at McGraw Hospice in Jacksonville, FL at the age of 82.
Bob was born in Hempstead, NY on June 22, 1933 to Josephine and Henry Totter. He was raised on Long Island along with his two brothers and joined the Navy at the age of 18 (his father would not let him join before that). After serving in the Navy, Bob attended and graduated from Hofstra University. Bob married Janet Matthei in 1954 and began their family in 1956 with the birth of their first daughter, Patricia. In 1959, their second daughter Vicki was born. The family relocated to Clearwater, FL where their third daughter Cynthia was born.
Bob was a consummate salesman, traveling around the southeast working in the food business for Hunt Wesson, Blue Plate Foods and Handee Pak. Ever the entrepreneur, Bob accepted a job in Georgia and off to Atlanta the family went. The Totters resided there until Janet’s death in 1979. At that time, he and his youngest daughter moved to Baltimore, MD where he became vice president of sales for McCormick Spice. It was there that he met his second wife of 29 years, Joyce Corcoran and gained two more daughters, Mary Neil and Lindley.
Joyce and Bob moved to California and then south Florida before settling in Atlantic Beach, FL. Upon retirement, he was an avid tennis player and was an active volunteer for SCORE helping small business owners manage and grow their businesses. Bob loved coaching others to achieve their success. He was passionate about local politics and ran for mayor of Atlantic Beach twice. He regularly met with other members of the local community to discuss issues of importance.
A memorial service to honor Bob will be held on May 13, 2016 at 10am at Christ Episcopal Church (400 San Juan Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach 32082). Reception to follow.
