Clarence C. Doerr (CC) passed away April 30, 2016 in Tallahassee Florida surrounded by family.
CC was born in Hueysville, Kentucky, in 1921. In the early 1930’s his family moved to Jacksonville Beach, Florida where he attended Fletcher High School. CC was a starter on the Fletcher inaugural football team in 1937 under Coach Shuler. He lettered in basketball, football, and excelled in track setting a state record for the 100 yard dash that stood for decades. After the Pearl Harbor attack he joined the Navy and served as an aviation radioman aboard the heavy cruiser USS Augusta. He met his wife, Rita Ferguson a Coast Guard Spar on Martha’s Vineyard in 1944 and were married in August of 1945. Upon discharge, CC brought his bride to live at Jacksonville Beach.
In the early 50’s he moved the family to Gainesville where he attended the University of Florida and made Gainesville his home, working at the engineering firm Black, Crow & Eidsness for 28 years. He retired to Fernandina Beach, Florida where he lived for 20 years prior to moving to Tallahassee.
He is preceded in death by his wife Rita and parents Bill & Betty Doerr of Jacksonville Beach. He is survived by his seven children: William (wife Gloria) of Titusville, Robert (wife Darlene) of Augusta, Georgia, Michele (husband Robert Carpenter) of Fernandina Beach, Terri (husband Ken Carter) of Tallahassee, Betty (husband Bill Caswell) of Gainesville, Patti of Tallahassee, and Kyle (Buddy) of Fernandina Beach. He is also survived by his brother Clayton Doerr and his Uncle George Huff of Jacksonville Beach. He had 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and many other family members that will remember him fondly.
A memorial service will be held at Forest Meadows East, 3700 SE Hawthorne Rd Gainesville, Florida at 11:00 am on May 14, 2016 which would have been his 95th birthday. Memorial donations can be made in his name to Honor Flight Tallahassee http://honorflighttallahassee.org
