St. Johns County Utilities recommends following EPA guidelines when reopening buildings that have been closed for an extended period of time. Stagnant water conditions can result in discolored water, lower chlorine levels and changes in water chemistry due to little or no water running through building water pipes and fixtures. Building managers and business owners who are reopening buildings are recommended to follow these steps:
• Review and understand the plumbing configuration and water usage in your building.
• Inspect the plumbing to ensure it is functioning properly and in good condition.
• Review the potential impact degraded water quality might have on your building occupants considering their use of the building and the building’s water systems.
• Flush the building’s plumbing system.
• Drain and clean water storage facilities and hot water heaters.
• Follow appropriate regulations and policies for worker safety and health while performing all activities.
Building managers and business owners are encouraged to contact their water utility company with questions regarding the status and quality of the water in their distribution system.
