U.S. Postal Service prepares for Hurricane Matthew

The U.S. Postal Service Gulf Atlantic District is preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Matthew by advising customers that normal service operations in the path of the storm may be affected in the event of unsafe conditions such as high winds, flooding, or impassable roads.

Postal Service employees in the USPS Gulf Atlantic District’s Northern Florida and South Georgia area will be working around-the-clock to secure the mail, postal facilities and equipment in advance of the arrival of Hurricane Matthew. The Gulf Atlantic District includes all ZIP code locations with the first three digits 298, 304, 308-310, 312-320, 322-326, 344, and 398.

The Postal Service has suspended mail delivery and retail operations in some coastal areas now affected by the approach of Hurricane Matthew, including the Fernandina Beach Post Office, located 1997 Sadler Road, Fernandina Beach.

On Friday, Oct. 7, Post Offices in North Florida and South Georgia with the first three ZIP code digits beginning with 322, 320, 315, 314 and 313 will be closed on Friday and Saturday. There will be no mail delivery, mail collections or retail services available. Full Post Office operations for these locations will resume at the normal time on Tuesday, Oct. 8, the day after the Columbus Day Holiday.

The Postal Service will observe the Columbus Day Holiday on Monday, Oct. 10.  All offices will be closed and there will be no regular mail delivery, mail collections or retail services.

In anticipation of severe storm conditions upon the arrival of Hurricane Matthew, mail processing plants in Jacksonville (the Jacksonville P&DC and the Jacksonville NDC) will shut down operations at 6:30 a.m., Friday morning, Oct. 7. Both mail processing plants expect to resume full operations at 3 p.m., Saturday afternoon, Oct. 8.
