Transportation planning organization considering Mayport Road

The North Florida Transportation Planning Organization will vote soon on whether to include $1.6 million for Mayport Road improvements.
The proposed project is on the TPO’s 2020 List of Priority Projects (LOPP). Typically the LOPP identifies projects for the fifth year of the Transportation Improvement Program.
The project includes improvements to Mayport Road between Donner and the flyover.
If placed on the LOPP, the next step is for the city of Atlantic Beach to have the project engineered. This will make the project “shovel ready” and more likely to get funded. Most projects on the LOPP include engineering as part of the funding ask.
Overall general details include reducing a lane on each side and/or taking space out of the median. The “borrowed” space will then be converted into a multi-purpose path and, where possible, landscaping between the path and the street.
The reduction in the lanes will slow traffic down, and the multi-purpose lane would encourage bikers and pedestrians to use this area and feel safe, according to planners. Enhancements will be made to crosswalks as well.
The engineering design is expected to cost $200,000 to $300,000.
