Man with gun and drugs arrested

School complains about homeless

James Jay Donovan, 40, of Ponte Vedra Beach was arrested June 21 in the 200 block of Landrum Lane for possessing of cocaine and trespassing on school property with a weapon or firearm, both third-degree felonies.
According to the police report, officers were dispatched to a suspicious circumstance call at Landrum Middle School before 9 a.m. on June 21 as a complainant advised there were about 20 homeless people wandering the woods.
Upon arrival, the responding officers heard a man in the woods, later identified as Donovan. Deputies made numerous attempts to call Donovan out of the woods, but he refused and repeatedly asked deputies to enter the woods and approach him; during this time, a deputy could see Donovan wielding a firearm, which he was holding down to his right side.
After a third command to drop the firearm, Donovan placed the firearm into his pocket. It was then removed by deputies and Donovan was placed in handcuffs.
A search was conducted of Donovan’s pockets and yielded a small plastic bag with an unknown white powdery residue, which tested positive for the presence of cocaine. A glass marijuana pipe was also found in his front shirt pocket.
