Lakeside Drive gate will remain closed

A heated debate between residents over whether to open the Lakeside Drive gate was ended Dec. 2 when the Jacksonville Beach City Council voted 4-3 to adopt a resolution to close the gate and explore electronic controls for public safety vehicles and access.
The city has maintained the gate at the north end of Lakeside Drive, separating it from Seagate Avenue, for a number of years. The gate is currently open while the state makes repairs to the nearby Kings Road Bridge.
In recent months, several residents on both sides of the gate have questioned its future use. Those on the north largely favor removing the gate or allowing access through it for residents. Those on the south said opening the gate will create traffic problems for a quiet residential area.
In addition, the city suggested a passageway be considered for low-speed vehicles (LSVs). The city attorney reported finding some associated legal issues with LSV access.
City Councilor Phil Vogelsang, who is also an attorney, questioned the city attorney’s conclusion regarding LSVs and called for more information. He and Councilors Cory Nichols and Keith Doherty voted against the resolution to keep the gate closed.
Councilor Georgette Dumont, who joined the majority in directing the gate be closed, said the issue has been “ripping the community apart.”
