The Beaches Watch Board of Directors announced the 2020 Fland Sharp Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Fletcher High School senior Jack Rowan, who shares in the Beaches Watch mission to preserve and improve the quality of life of the Beaches communities.
In 2019, the Beaches Watch scholarship was renamed the Fland Sharp Memorial Scholarship to honor former Jacksonville Beach Mayor Fland Sharp, a Fletcher graduate who dedicated his life serving Beaches communities to preserve and protect the quality of life. Sharp was also a founding member of Beaches Watch.
This year, Rowan stood out for his scholastic achievements, his commitment to improving the Beaches community quality of life and his steady participation in Beaches Watch programs over the past few years.
One of his teachers said, “Jack’s academic ability is extraordinary. I have never seen a student who is so motivated to do well and promote the best from the institutions that he is a part of and the people who surround him. His motivation seems to stem from an inherent desire to learn more about the world around him and how he can affect change in it.”
Rowan’s scholarship application included an essay that addressed the issue of environmental sustainability. Specifically, he examined the impact of fishing line and net disposal on environmental sustainability.
His numerous curricular activities included leadership roles on Fletcher’s Brain Bowl, Model United Nations and Great Decisions teams.
“Beaches Watch is pleased to award Jack Rowan the 2020 Fland Sharp Memorial Scholarship, thanks to the generous support of the Beaches Watch membership and Beaches community," said Beaches Watch President Maria Mark.
Jack will attend Florida State University, where he will major in political science with a minor in history.
