Former Atlantic Beach police chief found dead

Atlantic Beach’s former chief of police, Michael Classey, 54, of Woodstock, was located deceased Monday morning on the campus of a high school in Cherokee, Georgia.
According to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office,  Classey was identified as the former ABPD chief and had what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds and the death is an apparent suicide. A knife was located near his body. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week. The incident remains under investigation.
The director of communications for the sheriff’s office said that Classey’s car was located parked nearby. Video footage shows his vehicle arriving at the parking lot Sunday morning at approximately 10:52 a.m.
Classey became chief of police in August 2008 and resigned in September 2014 after being arrested.
