To encourage children to play outside, the Atlantic Beach City Commission agreed Nov. 18 to look at allowing the use of portable basketball goals in the right of way.
The decision came after city staff reported to commissioners that, in response to a citizen’s complaint, the city would be notifying residents with such basketball goals that they violate city code.
Code Enforcement Officer Angela Irizarry said the original complainant submitted five complaints about portable goals in the right-of-way in the Royal Palms neighborhood.
Commissioners said that they would prefer to amend the code to allow families to use portable play equipment. Commissioners added they would rather see children active than simply utilizing video games.
