Atlantic Beach police volunteers honored

Since the Atlantic Beach Citizens Police Academy was introduced in 2014, it was apparent that there was not only a need for a volunteer program, but a strong desire by some residents to participate.
Initiated in 2018, the Police Department volunteer program now has 37 participants. In the past nine months, volunteers have cumulatively donated more than 1,600 hours of their time serving in capacities including traffic control, special event personnel, clerical assistance and community engagement.
At the Oct. 14 City Commission meeting, Police Chief Michelle Cook recognized three volunteers – Ziad “Zee” Dagher, Aston Perry and Joseph Schwarz – who donated their time assisting the city with its Hurricane Dorian preparations.
Dagher and Schwarz installed hurricane shutters on the Police Department, and all three helped manage and clean the police facility, accepted food donations for staff who worked around the clock, and prepared and served food. Perry also assisted in the Emergency Operation Center by logging timely information that must be tracked.
“They went above and beyond for the Police Department and made themselves at our disposal during the many days that were spent preparing before the storm, during the storm, and even afterwards,” Cook said.
Cook said first responders appreciate the strong support of staff and volunteers.
“This is all about teamwork, and Zee, Aston and Joe were definitely an integral part of the team for the duration of the event,” she said.
