On July 11 at 11:52 p.m., Jacksonville Beach police officers responded to a traffic fatality on 2nd Street North in Jacksonville Beach. The investigation revealed that Joshua Lovingood was traveling south on 2nd Street North at a high rate of speed, well over twice the speed limit. Two pedestrians were walking south on 2nd Street North near 7th Avenue North when both were struck by Lovingood’s vehicle.
After striking the two pedestrians, Lovingood continued traveling south on 2nd Street North, striking a stop sign and a palm tree, causing the vehicle to flip and come to rest at 2nd Street North and 5th Avenue North. Lovingood was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, and he consented to a blood draw at the scene. The results of this blood draw revealed that Lovingood’s blood alcohol content was .228; additionally, THC was present in his system.
Pedestrian Bryn Turner was killed at the scene. The other pedestrian, Julio Gomez, sustained serious injuries and is still recovering.
An arrest warrant was obtained through the State Attorney’s Office, and Lovingood was arrested on Oct. 9 in Ohio. He will be extradited back to Florida.
His charges are driving under the influence (manslaughter), vehicular homicide, driving under the influence with damage, driving under the influence with injury and driving while license suspended or revoked.
