New uniforms are taking away some of the pain – literally – of being a police officer.
Fifteen of Jacksonville Beach’s police officers have been wearing a new vest that allows officers to carry more than 30 pounds of gear more comfortably. The vest replaces much of the function of the standard duty belt.
Officers who carry gear on a belt have long complained about hip and lower back pain, said Police Chief Gene Paul Smith, explaining that use of the vest will help employee wellness and longevity.
“From a health and safety standpoint, it is a game changer – sharp-looking and professional,” Smith said.
Departments nationwide have begin using the vests and testers have said there are no restrictions on an officer’s range of motion or any other issues. Guns and tasers will remain on duty belts, but radio, handcuffs, flashlights and other gear is carried on the vests.
Some officers have said the change provides more comfort. A total of 42 officers will be outfitted at a total cost of $66,433.
