MELBOURNE — For 66 minutes Feb. 4, Ponte Vedra and Plantation American Heritage were locked in a scoreless defensive battle to decide the Class 3A girls soccer state champion.
Then lightning struck — literally — in the sky above Tom McIntyre Stadium at Melbourne High School forcing a nearly half-hour weather delay with 14 minutes left to play in a rain-soaked second half.
