Tensions are still brewing between fishermen and surfers at the Jacksonville Beach fishing pier following a weekend brawl between the two sides.

A 36-year-old female surfer Sunday called police about 10:20 a.m. to report an attempted battery after she said two anglers were intentionally casting weighted lines at her while she was in the water.

The victim told police she was surfing about 150 feet north of the pier at 4th Avenue North when two fishermen started laughing and “cat calling” while continually tossing unbaited weighted lines at surfers.

One weight, she said, narrowly missed striking her in the face and hit her surfboard. A witness who was on the pier at the time said he watched the men purposefully “throw” weights at the surfers and yell profanity and threaten them.

Other anglers who were also on the pier when the incident occurred said the fishermen did not intentionally strike the surfers who they claim were in too close to the pier.

Because no one was injured, both parties were referred to the State Attorney's Office for prosecution. The surfer said she wanted to press charges.

Signs encouraging respect of the surfing and fishing boundaries are planned to go up near the pier as a way to educate both sides.
